Heel Bulb Laceration
On February 27th, 2020, Fireman, a 2-year-old Quarter Horse gelding, hung his foot on the lower strand of barbed wire completely tearing down the bottom strand. Due to the rainy, winter conditions, the wound was severely contaminated with the damage barely missing the joint and tendon sheath.
Dr. Emily Hood of Hood Equine Veterinary Services was dispatched within hours on an emergency call. She was able to deduce that the entire vascular and nerve bundle was severed medially and was able to palpate articular cartilage. The joint was distended to confirm no communication of the joint pouch due to the depth of the wound.
Dr. Hood placed half of a 5cm X 5cm EquusCell StemWrap into the laceration and sutured the wound closed. She then placed a cast on the leg on March 2nd, 2020.
Dr. Hood had this to say about the wound, “Despite cleaning it extensively and excising contaminated, injured tissue, there was still a large amount of contamination. I wholeheartedly feel that had I not used the StemWrap Biobandage, there would’ve been more tissue revitalization and secondary healing under the cast, compared to the extensive primary healing seen; regardless of it being sutured within the golden period. I’m super happy with the outcome; it was a nightmare.”
